This line has gone down from opening 49ers -3 to Raiders -1. I love it. The only play tonight is the 49ers and I will tell you why.
The main reason for this line moving is the 49ers QB situation. They have to start their third string QB Nick Mullens in place of CJ Beathard. This has caused the public to come in on the Raiders so much the line moved 4 points. The main reason I love the 49ers tonight is the coaching matchup. No one has done more with less talent than Kyle Shanahan over the past two years. Even at 1-7 this year they have been competitive in every game and were winning their last game until the final seconds. Even with CJ Beathard at QB the 49ers have still been competitive. I have never seen Nick Mullens play but having said that I do not think the drop off from CJ Beathard to Nick Mullens is worth 4 points. Kyle Shanahan coached teams have run a very efficient offense no matter who was at quarterback. I expect Kyle Shanahan to have a game plan catered to Nick Mullens’ strengths and I expect Mullens to be very well prepared.
Both of these teams came into the season with high expectations they have not lived up to. The Raiders are ranked 28th in overall efficiency and the 49ers are ranked 30th. Each team only has one win but the way they have played has been complete opposite. I think that has to do with coaching. Jon Gruden has not done a good job with the Raiders this year. We have seen the Raiders look unprepared both offensively and defensively and have been inconsistent all year. They also lost cornerback Dominique Rodgers Cromartie to a midseason retirement. Granted he didn’t quit at halftime like the Bills’ Vontae Davis but the fact he retired gives a glimpse into the Raiders’ locker room dysfunction. Thursday night games usually come down to which team is better coached and I think this game is no different. I expect the 49ers to run away with the win here. This may be my easiest pick of the year.
