This was a great week to get back on the right track. Hit a speed bump in the afternoon and then finished off the evening with an easy Lions outright win. Let’s take a look at each pick.
Dolphins -3 WIN
With 10:46 left in the second quarter the Raiders had the ball on their own 41. It was 3rd and 6 and Derek Carr was sacked. After the play Dolphins player Akeem Spence was assessed a 15 yard personal foul penalty that allowed the Raiders to keep the drive going and also disqualified Spence for the remainder of the game. The Raiders ended up taking another 7 minutes off the clock with this drive and getting a field goal out of it to go up 10-7 going into halftime. They scored a touchdown on their first drive after the intermission to go up 17-7. After that it was all Dolphins. The Raiders got tired towards the end of the game like I predicted and let up 2 long TD passes in the fourth quarter. The Raiders had more first downs, more total yards, more total plays and more time of possession but had one drive in the red zone end on a goal line stand and one with an interception. The Dolphins couldn’t really get their running game going but their passing game could not be stopped. I think this has more to do with Oakland’s bad defense and the Dolphins creative play calling. Raiders are currently 3 point favorites next week and the Dolphins will probably be around 3 or 4 point underdogs. I see the Dolphins losing next week and I can’t really see the Raiders winning either but I will probably stay away from that game.
NY Giants +6 WIN
Before the game we were treated to the wonderful news that Ereck Flowers would not be starting. That made a huge difference. The Giants actually looked like a competent football team for the first time in a long time. The Texans are also a full blown dumpster fire. This isn’t surprising as I wrote in the preseason that I thought Deshaun Watson was overrated and would not be able to continue playing at such a high level. Their defense looks old and slow and not as intimidating as it once was. The Giants are getting better and I think that week together helped. They face a tough test this week as 3.5 point home dogs to the Saints. The Texans travel to Indianapolis to play the Colts as 2.5 point underdogs.
Saints +3 WIN
What a football game this was. I predicted a big game from Drew Brees and Alvin Kamara. We got a huge game from both of them. The Falcons offense played well but their defense is banged up and could not make the plays when it counted. They gave up a tying TD drive at the end of the game and the winning TD drive in overtime. I will have to look into this game more later. The Saints are -3.5 on the road next week against the Giants and the Falcons are -5 at home against the Bengals
Washington +3 WIN
This one was easy from the start. That 3 points was such a trap for the public. The Redskins got off to a quick start and cruised to an easy outright win. The Packers had their chances to make it a game late but the Redskins defense held on for the win. I will have to look into this one more later as well. The Redskins have a bye next week and the Packers will take on the Bills at home as 10.5 point favorites.
Cowboys +1.5 LOSS
This game was boring and I didn’t pay too much attention to it. From what I saw it didn’t look like either team could move the ball very well. I will watch this game more in detail just like all the rest but either way I don’t think I will come out very impressed with either side. The Cowboys return home next week to play the Lions and the Seahawks travel to Arizona as 3 point favorites.
Chargers +7 LOSS
This was tough because everything the Chargers needed to do they did but they got in their own way also. They were able to get 2 turnovers in the red zone early in the game and didn’t get any points from either drive. Derwin James intercepted the ball in the end zone and went out of bounds at the 1. On the insuing drive the Rams blocked the Chargers punt and landed on it in the end zone to take an early 21-7 lead. The Chargers went into the half down 8 and then fumbled on the first drive to start the 3rd quarter. This turned into a Cooper Kupp 53 yard TD and put the game out of reach with the Rams up 28-13. The Chargers had the chance for the backdoor cover late in the game but turned the ball over on fourth down deep in Rams territory. They take on a 49ers team next week that will probably be without Jimmy Garoppolo. Even though this is a gome game for the Chargers there will probably be more 49ers fans in the stadium than Chargers fans. The Rams are 6.5 point favorites to the visiting Vikings on Thursday night. The Rams will continue to have high spreads until someone covers.
Lions +7 WIN
Another easy win to cap off a pretty easy day. This one went exactly as I wrote up. Lions got off to a quick start and won a low scoring game. This was Matt Patricia’s time to shine and he did so very well. The Patriots offense is having trouble right now without Edelman. Once he is back and Josh Gordon is fully integrated into the offense they will be much better.
Eagles -0.5 WIN
